I definitely understand the concept of "letting a kid be a kid" but by the same token, the ultimate responsibility of a parent, Christian or otherwise, is to teach their children how to be an adult, so I personally believe in treating children as much like an adult as that child can handle, while not "stealing their childhood". One of the best ways I see how to do this is exactly what you have done, giving them responsibility, and effectively communicating expectations, and then holding them to those. You are constantly pushing and moving and growing, and in the midst of everything, looking around to see how you can minister to others.
